Astoria to Tillamook.  65 miles and 3150 feet of climbing.  Well, we are finally heading down the West Coast!  Had a difficult time sleeping and was out of bed early to get this show on the road.  There is nothing quite like the first day of a long anticipated adventure.  Weather in the a.m. was sunny with intermittent fog, approximately 60 degrees with moderate wind out of the north.  Warmed up to mid 70's in the p.m., the wind picked up and the fog stayed off shore.  It was flat out gorgeous.  The terrain was quite hilly.  Lots of very long climbs followed by equally long descents.  These were the first hills I have ridden this season and they posed no real problems for me.  Road thru lots of farm land but the highlight was the coast.  It was AWESOME.  The first day was wonderful and I bet that tomorrow will be too!

Leaving Astoria.

There was a hot rod show in Seaside City.  I really think that Garrett and Ezra need a wagon like this.

I thought about buying this Corvair for Jack but after an Espresso and donut I came to my senses.

Coastline at Seaside Beach

The famous Hay Stack Rock at Cannon Beach

Towards the end of the day at one of many Scenic Turnouts.  Fog out at sea obscured some but not all of the views.

Did I take a wrong turn??

  1. Enjoy Bay City on the west coast because before you know it you will be back in the other Bay City. Our coast looks much different than the one you rode on today and problems at the sugar beet factory are causing a nasty smell that I'm sure is much less pleasant than the salt air you have been sucking in when you climb those monster hills.
