Day 10, Garberville, CA to Fort Bragg, CA. 68 miles and 5120 feet of climbing. A cool (58 degrees)but sunny day in California. During breakfast there was a brief drizzle but by the time we left it was clear and dry. Took Highway 101 out of town and then got on Route 1. We began climbing right away and these were not the rolly polly climbs we were accustomed to. After a dozen steep but short climbs we did a 4 mile climb from 500 feet above sea level to 1900 feet above sea level. That was followed by a 6 mile descent, down to 50 feet above sea level. Both the climb and descent were very curvey with tight switchbacks and hair pin curves. The final climb was 3 miles, from 50 feet to 1000 feet above sea level. 3 miles up and 3 miles down. The climbs were taxing and the descents were exhilerating. The bonus was that all of this took place in the Redwoods. As we came down from the final major descent we rounded a curve and there was the ocean. It was the first time in 2 days that we had seen her. From there to Fort Bragg it was about 20 miles on .rolling road that clung closely to the coast line. It was a very good day.
P.S. I was able to add some new pics to yestedays post. So check em out.
This ride was tailor made for me!
Route 1. We starte by climbing. We ended screaming aroud a corner to see an incredible view of the ocean.
Up we went, thru the Redwoods.
At the end this is what we were delivered to.
My smile is perpetually stuck!
In top of pic you can see the road. To paraphrase Jr's. idol KR, "It ain't the length of the road, it's the magic in. This road had a lot of magic in it!!!
Too cool for words!!
Harbor at Fort Bragg
What an accomplishment with all the steep climbs you made today. Looks like tomorrow will be even more climbing.
ReplyDeleteI am happy to report that Jack and I are no longer climbing the stairs each time we need to use the bathroom. Our good neighbor Steve came over today and fixed the downstairs toilet. A big shout out for great neighbors!!! I will have to get my work-out some other way than climbing the stairs dozens of times each day.

I suspect KR has done that ride before on a Harley....probably that's where he came up with the lyric - "My Harley's revving....if I had a &*((^$ I'd be in heaven"
ReplyDeleteEnjoy - be safe have fun
